Hooded Mergansers are very small diving ducks that feed on a wide range of material, but prefer fish. They arrive in our pond shortly after the ice leaves (or even sit on the ice edges until it does go). They use the pond for a period of about 3 months and then depart. However during that period, many fascinating events take place. I depict fighting, mating, and ducklings jumping from the nest to the water.
